Serenity

A small zone of lightness. No tasks and no goal.

There is nothing here to understand or to fix. Drop by when you want to breathe. Serenity is not a reward for good thinking. It is simply the background that has been here all along, only hidden by the clouds.

Joy doesn’t have to be about anything.

Clouds pass. The sky doesn’t have to watch over them.

Not everything has to be understood for things to be well.

Laughter for no reason is a perfectly good reason.

The warmth of tea in your hands asks for nothing.

Question for today

What is okay right now?

Don’t look for a big answer. Something small is enough: a breath, light in the window, quiet in the room.

A minute of noticing

  1. Stop for a moment where you are.
  2. Notice three things that are good right now, or even just neutral.
  3. Don’t add a “but.” If one appears, notice it and return to the three things.
  4. After a minute, simply go on.

Philosophy, lightly

Someone asks an old shepherd how to chase the clouds away. The shepherd looks at the sky and says: “I don’t chase them. I sit and wait until they get bored.” After a moment he adds: “And the sky never noticed that anyone was covering it.”

The story is made up, but the question of whether the sky can be covered at all is quite serious. Stay with it, if you like.
